Dana-Farber's Mammography Van is coming to Charlestown! Women ages 40 and older who are due or overdue for a mammogram/breast health screening are encouraged to call 617-724-9642 to register for a FREE mammogram.
A mammogram is an X-ray examination of the breast and it is the best test that health providers have to find breast cancer early. When their breast cancer is found early, many women go on to live long and healthy lives. The American Cancer Society guidelines for the early detection of breast cancer are yearly mammograms for women age 40 and older.
The goal of screening mammography is to find cancer when it is still too small to be felt by breast self-examination or your doctor. Finding small breast cancers early by a screening mammogram greatly improves your chance for successful treatment. Mammograms produce high quality X-ray images, with a low dose of radiation. For a mammogram, the breast is positioned between two smooth plastic plates to flatten your breast tissue and allow a lower dose of X-ray. Although this may be temporarily uncomfortable, it only lasts for a few seconds. The entire procedure for a screening mammogram takes about 15 minutes. You will need to undress above the waist for your mammogram so it is a good idea to wear a shirt with pants, shorts, or skirt, rather than a dress.
The Van will be parked at the Bunker Hill Mall from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
